MMSD is seeking qualified candidates for the position of UAV Project Surveyor in the Technical Services Division.  Reporting to the Survey Services Supervisor, you will plan and conduct all aerial surveys for MMSD projects capturing high-resolution images/videos, photogrammetric data, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data, and thermal imaging.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage on-site preparation and validation of flights, prepare and maintain aircraft and accessories, set up sensors, coordinate regulatory permissions with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and generate flight paths.  
  • Process photographic and video imagery, photogrammetric data, LiDAR data, and thermal imagery to create detailed 3D models, point clouds, orthophotos, and topographic surfaces.  
  • Conduct quality checks to ensure accuracy and completeness of aerial data, 3D models, and other visualization deliverables. Implement and maintain quality control procedures and MMSD UAV survey standards. 
  • Remain current with changes in technology and industry best practices.  Manage the UAV, sensors, and software to ensure proper maintenance, calibration, and updates.
  • Assist other survey staff with assignments, including work required for construction surveying, topographic surveying, boundary surveying, and terrestrial scanning.
  • Maintain proficiency in other land surveying specialties.  
  • Complete special projects as assigned.  

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in land surveying, civil engineering, geomatics, or a related field. 
  • Three years of land surveying experience.
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification -OR- the ability to obtain the certification within 12 months of start date.
  • National Society of Professional Surveyors Certified Survey Technician (CST) Level One Certification -OR- the ability to obtain the certification within 12 months of start date.
  • Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD), photogrammetry, and LiDAR software, and survey data processing software.
  • Expertise in all survey field instrumentation.
  • Ability to keep accurate and detailed records and field notes to deliver industry standard work products.  
  • Computer software proficiency.  
  • Confined space entry and CPR certifications (provided by MMSD).
  • Valid driver's license and a good driving record at time of application, during the selection process, and throughout employment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 lbs. of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 lbs. of force.
  • Work regularly requires standing and using hands.  Work frequently requires walking, speaking, hearing, climbing or balancing, and reaching with hands and arms. Work occasionally requires sitting, kneeling or crawling, pushing or pulling, and repetitive motions.  
  • Ability to access a confined space through a 20-inch diameter opening.
Sensory Requirements:
  • Work has standard vision requirements.  Vocal communication is required for expressing ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, use of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities. 
Environmental Exposures:
  • Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions.  Work occasionally requires working near moving, mechanical parts.  
  • Work is generally in a loud noise location (heavy traffic, large equipment, etc.).

Requires the use of safety glasses and shoes, hardhat, hearing protection, coveralls, gloves, rain gear, safety vest, and self-contained breathing apparatus as dictated by the location and type of work being performed.
