Job Responsibilities




The Responsibilities of the UAS Coordinator:

Coordinates SCFC UAS program design, implementation and daily administrative activities, including maintenance of standard operating procedures for UAS use, training for UAS pilots, and maintenance of agency drones. Ensure drone operations are conducted in compliance with FAA regulations, develop plans and procedures to maintain safe integration of agency UAS into the National Airspace System and active fire traffic areas, document training and proficiency of drone pilots. Coordinate purchase of new drones, spare parts, drone related software, and other associated equipment. Prepares and presents reports related to agency UAS use and needs. Reviews program objectives to determine compatibility with agency's mission; assesses programs and implements policy and procedures or rule change. Represents the SC Forestry Commission at drone related conferences and meetings. 

  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures and SCFC UAS operations. Ensure SCFC UAS operations are in compliance with FAA regulations and agency policies; represent the agency at drone related conferences, meetings, and events.
  • Coordinate training and recruitment of agency drone pilots. Develop training materials, coordinate training events, and ensure pilots maintain proficiency. Keep accurate records of training, flights, drone maintenance, and currency for all agency UAS pilots.
  • Maintain SCFC drone fleet, develop replacement plan for drones, and secure grants/funding to acquire replacement drones as needed. Provide information to document expenditures for drones, software, and accessories for grants. Maintain insurance on agency drones; ensure FAA registration is complete and accurate for all drones and maintain an accurate list of SCFC drone pilots and documentation of current Part 107 certification.
  • Maintain software licenses needed for efficient drone operations; work with GIS staff to manage imagery and data acquired by drones. Work with Fire Staff and Dispatch personnel to integrate drone use into agency processes for wildfire and emergency response.  Work with agency staff from all programs to integrate drone use into management, tree improvement, and communications processes.
  • Maintain Fireline qualifications; assist with wildfire response, prescribed burning, and emergency response activities.
  • Participates in activities and/or projects in support of agency's mission and performs other duties as required.   
Position has optional work locations in each of the following counties: Richland, Darlington, Colleton, Hampton, Orangeburg, Newberry, and York.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree and one (1) year of relevant program experience or equivalency as approved by Human Resources. 
  • Current FAA Part 107 certification is required. 
  • Must pass a physical fitness test of walking two (2) miles in thirty (30) minutes carrying a 25 lb. pack or meet the agency's physical fitness program requirements. 
  • Must obtain firefighter registration with the SC State Fire Marshal's office. 
  • A criminal background check is a condition of employment. 
  • Drug and alcohol testing is a condition of employment. 
  • Must possess a valid driver's license (Class D). 
  • Must complete SCFC Basic Fire School within one year. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science in uncrewed aircraft systems, aviation science, aviation safety, aeronautics or a related field, and documentation of a minimum of 20 hours of UAS flight time.  

Additional Comments

  • Must be a resident of South Carolina. 
  • This position works statewide. Occasional overnight travel required.
  • Must be able to lift, walk, squat, climb, and carry objects up to 50 lbs. 
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing environmental conditions. Position requires occasional work outside in cold or hot weather. 
  • Works a Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm schedule. Duties require weekend and evening work providing support to firefighting and field operations. 
  • Working knowledge of operation, maintenance, software, and regulations regarding Unmanned Aircraft Systems (drones). Ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally.  Ability to establish working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.  Ability to act effectively in emergency or stressful situations.
  • This position is designated as essential and safety sensitive. Position is subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace Drug & Alcohol Testing.
