The Principal Electrical Engineer will lead the electrical design and prototyping of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs), with a focus on developing reliable, low-cost systems for attritable and expendable platforms. It requires expertise in electrical system architecture, integration, and component selection to support rapid production using advanced manufacturing methods and stable, scalable supply chains. The Principal Electrical Engineer will drive innovation in power distribution, control systems, and avionics design to ensure performance, manufacturability, and mission readiness across all unmanned platforms.

 

This position is a key technical contributor for Ideal Aerosmith’s next-generation unmanned and autonomous defense systems portfolio. This position bridges innovation and execution - ensuring every prototype, system integration, and flight test directly contributes to validated, deployable capability for distributed maritime and joint-force operations.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of electrical systems for UAVs and USVs, including power distribution, control systems, communication systems, and sensor integration. 
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including aerospace engineers, mechanical engineers, and industrial engineers to ensure seamless integration of electrical systems with other vehicle components. 
  • Design and prototype electronic components and subsystems, ensuring compliance with performance requirements, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. 
  • Conduct feasibility studies and risk assessments to evaluate design concepts and identify potential technical challenges or limitations. 
  • Develop and implement innovative production solutions and manufacturing processes to facilitate rapid and cost-effective production of electrical components and systems. 
  • Optimize electrical designs for efficiency, reliability, and scalability, leveraging advanced manufacturing techniques and materials. 
  • Work closely with suppliers and vendors to ensure the availability of high-quality components and materials, while optimizing costs and lead times. 
  • Provide technical guidance and support to junior engineers and production staff, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement. 

 

Qualification Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field. Master's degree preferred. 
  • 10+ years of experience in electrical engineering, with a focus on designing electrical systems for complex systems, preferably in the aerospace or defense industry. 
  • Due to federal contract requirements, candidates must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. §1324b(a)(3).

 

Skill Requirements 

  • Proven track record of successfully leading design and prototyping projects for electrical systems. 
  • Strong understanding of power distribution, system shielding, antennas, radio links, control systems, communication protocols, and sensor integration. 
  • Experience with CAD software for electrical design and simulation tools. 
  • Familiarity with advanced manufacturing techniques, such as PCB manufacturing, electronic assembly, and testing. 
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on innovation, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. 
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Ability to travel (domestic and internationally).
  • Must have valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a passport.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Must have the ability to lift and/or carry 45 lbs.
  • Ability to work for extended periods at computer workstation/keyboard.
  • Ability to type accurately and efficiently.
  • The position will require walking, standing, squatting, crouching, stooping, lifting, climbing, pulling, pushing, sitting, repetitive motion and kneeling.

 

Salary Range: $140,000-230,000

 

The salary range provided serves as a general guideline. Actual base compensation will be determined based on multiple factors, including location, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s qualifications, experience, education, skills, and prevailing market conditions.

 

Depending on the position, employees may also be eligible for overtime pay and a discretionary annual bonus. These bonuses are intended to recognize individual performance and align employee contributions with company results.
